The Rarest Tea of the Collection: Silver Needle Full Moon
Silver Needle Full Moon is a tea that brings together two traditions, one rooted in classical Chinese craftsmanship and the other shaped by a contemporary Himalayan vision.
At its core, Silver Needle refers to one of the most revered white tea styles in the world. Known in Chinese as Baihao Yinzhen (白毫银针), it is made exclusively from the unopened buds of the tea plant. These young buds, covered in fine silvery down, are harvested before the leaves unfold, at a moment of perfect stillness in the plant’s development.
The processing is minimal and precise. After careful plucking, the buds are gently withered and dried without rolling, preserving their natural structure and allowing only the slightest touch of oxidation. The result is a tea of remarkable clarity and refinement, defined by soft sweetness, delicate floral notes, and a texture that feels almost weightless on the palate. In China, Baihao Yinzhen has long been associated with purity, restraint, and a deep mastery of timing.

Plucking under the light of the Moon
The second element of this tea is the full moon harvest, a concept developed and popularized in Darjeeling by Rajah Banerjee, one of the most influential figures in modern Indian tea. As the former steward of Makaibari Tea Estate and today guiding the Rimpocha cooperative, his work has consistently challenged conventional approaches to tea agriculture, sustainability, and quality. His philosophy reconnects tea with natural cycles, farming intuition, and long-term ecological balance.
The full moon harvest is based on the belief that lunar cycles influence plant vitality, sap flow, and aromatic intensity, an idea shared across biodynamic agriculture and many traditional farming cultures. During the days surrounding the full moon, the tea plant is understood to reach a peak of internal movement and energy. Harvesting at this moment is not about increasing yield, but about capturing a specific and fleeting expression of the plant.
At Jungpana Tea Estate, this philosophy has found a natural home. Guided by Rajah Banerjee’s vision, the estate produces select micro lots using full moon plucking, applying it to a Silver Needle style made entirely from tender buds. Jungpana’s altitude, cool nights, and forested surroundings create ideal conditions for slow and careful bud development, allowing for both concentration and finesse.

A Delicate, yet Complex Cup
The result is a white tea that brings together Himalayan freshness with the refinement of Chinese technique.
Silver Needle Full Moon is not a tea of power, but of precision. In the cup, it reveals gentle florality, soft sweetness, and a quiet depth that unfolds gradually with each infusion. It is a tea that rewards attention, inviting a slower pace and a more deliberate way of tasting.
More than a rare tea, it is an idea made tangible. A meeting point between tradition and innovation, between Darjeeling’s evolving identity and ancient tea wisdom, and between a singular tea mind and a garden committed to excellence.
